Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE MOUNTAIN ROAD CLOSED

The blizzard returned that evening.

Snow buried the roads.

The power flickered.

Then failed.

Amelia sat in her motel room with a flashlight and a blanket.

Her phone battery was nearly dead.

She heard footsteps outside.

Her heart stopped.

A knock.

“Amelia?”

Lorenzo's voice.

She stared at the door.

He had returned to Colorado after receiving news that investigators were pursuing a lead on Daniel.

She approached cautiously.

“Why are you here?”

“There's a storm warning. The motel manager said the heating system failed.”

Amelia looked toward the dead heater.

He continued.

“There's an emergency shelter at the community center. I can help you get there if you'd like.”

She hesitated.

Then opened the door.

Lorenzo stood outside wearing a heavy coat.

Snow covered his shoulders.

His face looked exhausted.

Amelia stared.

“You came back.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Because I said I would.”

For a moment, she remembered the man she had loved.

Not the mafia boss.

Not the feared leader.

Just Enzo.

The man who once drove forty miles in the rain because she wanted lemon cake.

She swallowed.

“Okay.”

May you like

He stepped aside.

And waited for her to choose.
