Chapter 8 - THE WAITRESS WHO REFUSED TO RUN

Elena wanted to disappear again.
She packed her bag.
Checked the cash.
Reviewed bus schedules.
Then she stopped.
For four years, running had kept her alive.
But it had also kept her alone.
She had no family nearby.
No permanent friendships.
No future she allowed herself to imagine.
She looked at Michael's letter.
Don't blame yourself.
Then she called Adrian.
"I'm not leaving."
He was silent.
She continued.
"I'll testify."
Adrian exhaled.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
He waited.
"I'm terrified."
"That's understandable."
"But I'm tired of hiding."
Adrian's voice softened.
"Then we'll do this properly."
Elena met with federal investigators through an attorney.
She provided her original account of the shooting.
The records from Michael's storage unit.
And details about the threats that forced her into hiding.
Investigators began corroborating her statements.
They also reviewed the original police report.
Several inconsistencies emerged.
Witness statements had been altered.
Evidence had been misplaced.
And one officer involved in the investigation had later received suspicious payments through a company linked to Victor.
Elena stared at the findings.
"They knew."
The investigator nodded.
"Somebody knew enough to interfere."
Elena closed her eyes.
For four years, she had believed she was running from a single dangerous man.
Now she understood the truth.

She had been running from a network.
And the only way to stop running was to help expose it.
