Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CONTROLLED THE PORT

Victor Salerno had built his power quietly.

He wasn't the most feared man in New York.

That title belonged to Adrian Moretti.

But Victor understood something Adrian sometimes forgot.

Power didn't always belong to the person everyone feared.

Sometimes it belonged to the person who controlled the information.

Victor managed shipping schedules.

Warehouse access.

Private contractors.

And financial approvals.

He knew which containers moved.

Which invoices were paid.

And which people could be trusted to keep silent.

For years, he had used that access to build a hidden network.

Money moved through shell companies.

Cargo disappeared.

Insurance claims were manipulated.

And anyone who asked too many questions was pushed aside.

Michael Torres had discovered the pattern.

Elena Ward had helped him trace it.

And now, four years later, both the records and the surviving witness had resurfaced.

Victor learned about Elena's identity from a private investigator.

He stared at the photograph.

Sarah Mitchell.

Waitress.

Eddie's Diner.

He recognized her immediately.

"Impossible."

His assistant looked up.

"Sir?"

Victor placed the photograph on the desk.

"She's alive."

He made a phone call.

"Find out what she knows."

Meanwhile, Adrian began quietly removing Victor's access to sensitive company systems.

He also hired independent forensic accountants to review the records from the storage unit.

The findings were alarming.

Millions of dollars had been diverted.

Several shipping companies had been used to conceal illegal transactions.

And Victor appeared to have authorized payments to individuals connected to Michael's murder.

Adrian stared at the report.

For years, he had believed loyalty was something he could recognize.

Now he understood how easily it could be performed.

He called his attorney.

"We're going to the authorities."

The attorney hesitated.

"Adrian, some of these records may expose your own organization."

Adrian looked toward a photograph of Bella on his desk.

He thought of Elena.

Michael.

And the people who had suffered because he trusted the wrong man.

"Then they expose it."
