Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE FALSE NAME

Elena Ward officially reclaimed her identity.
It wasn't simple.
There were documents.
Legal proceedings.
Employment records.
And questions she had avoided for years.
But she no longer wanted to live as a ghost.
She returned to community college.
This time, she enrolled under her real name.
She chose forensic accounting.
The same field that had nearly gotten her killed.
Adrian asked whether she was certain.
She smiled.
"Numbers still don't lie."
He laughed.
"Fair enough."
Elena continued working part-time at Eddie's Diner.
Eddie insisted.
"You're family, kid."
She cried when he said it.
Mr. Peterson celebrated her enrollment by ordering two slices of pie.
"One for you," he said.
She laughed.
"You know I'm working."
"Then eat it later."
For the first time in years, Elena began making plans.
Real plans.
Not escape routes.
Not emergency bags.

Plans for a future.
And slowly, she began to believe she deserved one.
