Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT THE BULLETS FLEW

Four years earlier, Sarah Mitchell had been someone else.
Her real name was Elena Ward.
She was twenty-four.
A forensic accounting assistant working for a small investigative firm in Philadelphia.
Her job was ordinary.
Invoices.
Bank statements.
Corporate records.
The kind of work that made other people sleepy.
But Elena loved numbers.
Numbers didn't flatter.
They didn't threaten.
They didn't lie.
People lied.
Numbers revealed where the lies were hidden.
Her supervisor, Michael Torres, had been investigating a network of shell companies connected to illegal shipping contracts.
The money moved through ports.
Warehouses.
Insurance claims.
And construction projects.
At first, Elena believed the investigation concerned tax fraud.
Then Michael discovered something much worse.
The same companies appeared in records associated with missing cargo shipments and unexplained deaths.
One evening, Michael called Elena.
"Come to the office."
She looked at the clock.
"It's almost eleven."
"I know."
"Can it wait?"
"No."
His voice sounded frightened.
That frightened her more than anything.
When she arrived, the office lights were off.
Michael stood near the window.
He held a folder.
"Elena, listen carefully."
She stared.
"What's wrong?"
"We found something."
"What?"
"A payment trail."
"To whom?"
Michael swallowed.
"Someone inside the Moretti organization."
Elena felt cold.
The Moretti name was well known.
Powerful.
Dangerous.
Michael continued.
"I thought Adrian Moretti was behind it."
Elena stared.
"Was he?"
Michael shook his head.
"I don't think so."
He opened the folder.
Inside were records of payments authorized under a false corporate identity.
The signatures had been forged.
The money had been routed through a company called Harbor Meridian Holdings.
Michael pointed to a name.
Victor Salerno.
Elena frowned.
"Who's that?"
"Moretti's operations director."
Then Michael said something she never forgot.
"He's been stealing from his own boss."
Before Elena could answer, the office door opened.
Three men entered.
One held a gun.
Michael shoved Elena behind a desk.
"Run!"
The first shot shattered the window.
The second struck Michael.
Elena screamed.
Then someone grabbed her arm.
She fought.
A gun discharged.
Pain exploded through her left forearm.
She fell.
Blood spread across the carpet.
The men believed she was dead.
She heard one of them say:
"Leave her."
Then footsteps.
A door.
Silence.
Elena crawled toward Michael.
He was dying.
She pressed her hand against his wound.
"Stay with me."
He shook his head.
"Listen."
Tears streamed down her face.
"Please."
Michael gripped her wrist.
"Moretti isn't the enemy."
She stared.
"Then who?"
His voice broke.
"Salerno."
Then he pushed something into her hand.
A small metal key.
"Don't trust the police report."
His fingers loosened.
And Michael Torres died.
Elena survived.
A cleaning crew found her hours later.
She was hospitalized under an assumed name after an investigator warned that someone had already requested her medical records.
Within days, she disappeared.
She changed her name.
Moved to New York.
And became Sarah Mitchell.

Now, four years later, Bella Moretti had noticed her scar.
And the past had found her again.
