Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE BESIDE THE HARBOR
A year later, Elena graduated from her forensic accounting program.
She had earned top marks.
Eddie attended the ceremony.
Mr. Peterson brought flowers.
Bella wore a dress covered in tiny stars.
And Adrian sat in the front row.
When Elena crossed the stage, Bella shouted:
"THAT'S MY ELENA!"
Everyone laughed.
Elena cried.
Afterward, Adrian took her to the harbor.
The sun was setting.
The water glowed gold.
He looked nervous.
Elena smiled.
"What's wrong?"
He laughed.
"Nothing."
"You're terrible at lying."
He looked at her.
"Elena."
She waited.
"Four years ago, we were both caught in something terrible."
Her expression softened.
He continued.
"I can't undo it."
"I know."
"But I can promise you something."
She looked at him.
"I won't build our future on secrets."
Her eyes filled.
Adrian reached into his coat.
A small velvet box.
Elena gasped.
He opened it.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
"Elena Ward."
Tears ran down her face.
"Will you marry me?"
She laughed through tears.
"Yes."
Adrian smiled.
Then kissed her.
And somewhere behind them, Bella shouted:
"FINALLY!"
They turned.
Bella stood beside her grandmother.
Grinning.
Elena burst out laughing.
Adrian shook his head.
"She planned this."
