Chapter 6 - THE STORAGE UNIT NO ONE OPENED

The storage facility stood in an industrial district outside Newark.

It was old.

Unremarkable.

And nearly empty.

Adrian arrived with Elena and two trusted security personnel.

They had also notified an attorney who specialized in handling evidence.

The manager led them down a narrow corridor.

Unit 317.

Elena stared at the number.

Michael had written it on a sticky note once.

She remembered.

She hadn't understood why.

Her hands shook as she inserted the key.

It turned.

The door opened.

Inside were three metal boxes.

A folding chair.

And a small desk.

Elena approached the first box.

Inside were financial records.

Bank statements.

Shipping invoices.

And copies of contracts.

The second contained photographs.

Victor Salerno meeting with unknown men.

Trucks entering restricted warehouses.

Containers being transferred at night.

The third box held a hard drive.

And a letter.

Addressed to Elena.

She stared.

Then opened it.

Elena,

If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.

I should have told you earlier how dangerous this investigation became.

You were right about the numbers. They never lied.

The person stealing from Moretti is using his name to protect himself.

If anything happens to me, take these records to someone who can investigate independently.

Do not trust Victor Salerno.

And don't blame yourself.

You did your job.

Michael.

Elena began crying.

For four years, she had carried guilt.

She believed Michael died because she failed to understand the danger.

Now his words reached her from beyond the grave.

Adrian stood beside her.

He didn't touch her.

He simply waited.

When she finally looked up, she whispered:

"He knew."

Adrian nodded.

"He knew someone was coming."

Elena wiped her face.

May you like

Adrian looked at the boxes.

"Then we finish what he started."
