Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH THAT COST HIM EVERYTHING

The letter was written in my grandfather's handwriting.
I recognized every curve.
Every careful line.
Nora,
If you're reading this, then someone has finally come looking for what I kept.
I never wanted you involved.
But I couldn't destroy the evidence.
Years ago, I repaired a watch for a young man who had nowhere else to go.
His name was Caleb Rowe.
I looked up.
Caleb stood motionless.
I continued reading.
He was trying to escape the men who controlled the city's construction contracts.
He brought me records proving they were stealing from workers, investors, and families.
I hid the records because I believed one day they might help him make things right.
My throat tightened.
I looked at Caleb.
“You knew.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
I stared.
“You knew my grandfather had this.”
“Yes.”
“And you came here because of it.”
He swallowed.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I whispered:
“So this was never about me.”
Caleb's expression changed.
“Nora.”
I stepped back.
“Don't.”
He looked devastated.
I continued.
“You heard my list.”
He nodded.
“You knew I'd been humiliated.”
His eyes filled.
“And you still let me believe you came back because you wanted to see me.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I did want to see you.”
I shook my head.
“But you also wanted the evidence.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then I handed him the letter.
“Rule number eight.”
His face tightened.
I continued.
“You told me truth was expensive.”
May you like
A pause.
“Now I understand why.”
