Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO KEPT HIS PROMISE

One year after Blake canceled our wedding, Caleb asked me to meet him at the bar where we'd first spoken.
I arrived at eleven twenty-three.
The same booth.
The same walnut divider.
The same low hanging lamp.
Caleb stood when I approached.
“Nora.”
I smiled.
“Caleb.”
He pulled out my chair.
I sat.
Then noticed something on the table.
A cocktail napkin.
My handwriting.
The original list.
I stared.
“How did you get that?”
He smiled.
“You left it at my office.”
I laughed.
“Of course.”
He sat opposite me.
Then placed a small velvet box on the table.
My heart raced.
“Caleb.”
He smiled nervously.
“I've spent a year trying to understand what you meant that night.”
I stared.
He continued.
“Not just the rules.”
A pause.
“But why you needed them.”
My eyes filled.
He looked at me.
“You'd been made to feel like love was something you had to earn.”
I swallowed.
He shook his head.
“It isn't.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a beautiful ring.
Simple.
Elegant.
Perfect.
Caleb looked at me.
“Nora Bellamy.”
His voice broke.
“Will you marry me?”
I stared.
For a moment, I remembered Blake.
The canceled wedding.
The humiliation.
The heartbreak.
Then I looked at Caleb.
A man who had made mistakes.
Told difficult truths.
Accepted consequences.
And spent a year proving that promises mattered.
I smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Caleb laughed.
“Really?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He slipped the ring onto my finger.
Then kissed me.
And somewhere behind us, Lacey Quinn began applauding.
I turned.
She stood beside the bar.
Grinning.
“I knew it!”
I laughed.
Caleb shook his head.
“She's been planning this for weeks.”
Lacey raised her bourbon.
“To rule number ten!”
I smiled.
Then looked at Caleb.
May you like
And whispered:
“I think you passed.”
