Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE THAT CHANGED LOUISVILLE

The investigation lasted months.
Several developers faced charges.
Contracts were suspended.
Financial records were reviewed.
And Blake Fenwick's company collapsed under the weight of its own misconduct.
Caleb cooperated fully.
He provided documents.
Testified.
And accepted responsibility for his earlier involvement in the corrupt network.
It cost him money.
Contracts.
And several powerful relationships.
But he didn't retreat.
One evening, I found him sitting alone in his office.
He looked exhausted.
“Caleb.”
He looked up.
“Nora.”
I sat opposite him.
“Long day?”
He smiled faintly.
“Very.”
I studied him.
“Regrets?”
He considered.
Then shook his head.
“No.”
I smiled.
“Good.”
He looked at me.
“Why are you here?”
I hesitated.
Then answered honestly.
“Because I wanted to see you.”
His expression changed.
I continued.
“Not because you saved my shop.”
He nodded.
“Not because you're rich.”
He smiled faintly.
“That's reassuring.”
I laughed.
“And not because I'm lonely.”
His eyes softened.
I looked at him.
“Because I think you're trying to become the man you should have been all along.”
He swallowed.
Then whispered:
“I'm trying.”
May you like
I smiled.
“I know.”
