Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T BE BOUGHT

Caleb offered to buy the building.

I refused.

He offered security.

I refused that too.

Then he offered to pay for the repairs.

I stared.

“Caleb.”

He stopped.

I folded my arms.

“You don't get to solve this by spending money.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“Then tell me everything.”

He took a breath.

For the next two hours, Caleb explained his past.

He had grown up poor.

His father worked construction.

A corrupt development network controlled contracts throughout Louisville.

Workers were underpaid.

Safety complaints disappeared.

And money moved through shell companies.

Caleb had once worked for the network.

At first, he believed he could change it from inside.

Then he discovered how deeply the corruption ran.

He gathered evidence.

Tried to expose it.

And nearly died.

My grandfather helped him hide.

Years later, Caleb built his own business empire.

But some of the old network remained.

Blake Fenwick's redevelopment project was connected to people who wanted the records destroyed.

I listened.

Then asked:

“Why didn't you tell me at the bar?”

Caleb looked down.

“Because I didn't know whether I could trust you.”

I nodded slowly.

“And now?”

He met my eyes.

“Now I know I should have trusted you sooner.”

I looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Trust isn't something you earn by protecting me from information.”

He nodded.

May you like

“I know.”

For the first time, I believed he might actually understand.
