Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE MAFIA CAME CALLING

That night, someone broke into Bellamy Clockworks.
I heard the glass shatter from the apartment above the shop.
I froze.
Then grabbed my phone.
Called 911.
And locked my bedroom door.
Footsteps moved downstairs.
A drawer slammed.
Someone cursed.
Then I heard a voice.
“Find the clock.”
My stomach dropped.
The grandfather clock.
I looked toward the stairs.
Then heard another sound.
A car door.
Footsteps.
A man's voice.
Caleb.
“Step away from the building.”
Silence.
Then someone ran.
I heard shouting.
A crash.
Then police sirens.
By the time officers arrived, the intruders had fled.
Caleb stood outside the shop.
His expression was dark.
When he saw me, he approached.
“Nora.”
I stared.
“How did you know?”
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“I had someone watching the building.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
He looked down.
“I was worried.”
I stepped back.
“You had someone watching me?”
His jaw tightened.
“The building.”
“Without telling me?”
Silence.
I folded my arms.
“Caleb.”
He looked at me.
I continued.
“Rule number eight.”
His expression changed.
Then he nodded.
“You're right.”
I stared.
He swallowed.
“I should have told you.”

For the first time, I saw something unexpected.
