Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ALEXANDER HAD BURIED
Alexander eventually told Claire the full truth about Vanessa.
He had been unhappy.
Restless.
And convinced that the demands of his life justified seeking comfort elsewhere.
He had mistaken Vanessa's admiration for love.
He had told himself that Claire would be better off without him.
But he had never asked Claire what she wanted.
He had made the decision alone.
And destroyed their marriage.
Claire listened.
Then asked, “Do you still love her?”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
She looked down.
“Did you ever?”
He was quiet.
Then answered.
“I thought I did.”
Claire swallowed.
“And me?”
Alexander's eyes filled.
“I loved you.”
She looked at him.
“That's not the same as respecting me.”
He closed his eyes.
“No.”
She nodded.
“Then you understand why I can't simply come back.”
