Chapter 8 - THE GIRL WHO CALLED HIM DADDY

The video of Grace haunted Adrian.

He watched it again and again in his memory.

The way she held the purple crayon.

The way she tilted her head.

The small voice asking for Mommy.

He had spent three years imagining Evelyn somewhere frightened and alone.

Now he knew she'd been fighting to protect their child.

And he'd never known the child existed.

That night, he sat beside Evelyn on the guest-room floor.

They spoke quietly.

About Grace.

Her favorite foods.

Her bedtime routine.

The way she hated loud thunder.

"She likes strawberries," Evelyn whispered.

Adrian smiled through tears.

"So do you."

"She loves books."

"Like you."

Evelyn nodded.

"She asks about her daddy."

Adrian stopped.

"What do you tell her?"

Evelyn's eyes filled.

"That he loves her."

His throat tightened.

"Even when Luca told me you were dead, I couldn't tell her you didn't love her."

Adrian covered his face.

Evelyn touched his shoulder.

"She knows your name."

He looked up.

"She does?"

She nodded.

"Adrian."

He laughed through tears.

"That's a difficult name for a toddler."

"She says A-dree."

Adrian smiled.

Then began crying.

Evelyn embraced him.

For a long time, they sat together.

Not as a mafia boss and his missing wife.

Just two parents grieving the years stolen from them.

Later, Mrs. Hargrove returned.

She carried a small tablet.

"I found something."

Adrian looked up.

"What?"

"A recording from the lake house."

The video showed a hallway.

A little girl walked beside a nanny.

Grace.

Adrian leaned closer.

Then another figure appeared.

A young boy.

Noah.

He approached Grace.

She held out her hand.

He took it.

They walked together toward a playroom.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"They know each other."

Mrs. Hargrove nodded.

"They've been raised together."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

The older woman hesitated.

"Because Noah is important to Luca."

"His son?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked down.

"No."

Adrian stared.

"What?"

She took a breath.

"Noah is the real Malcolm Vale's grandson."

Silence.

Adrian felt the pieces shift.

The billionaire's identity.

The stolen fortune.

The missing boy.

Mrs. Hargrove continued.

"Malcolm Vale's daughter died in a suspicious accident six years ago. Noah was her only child."

Adrian stared.

"And Luca took him."

She nodded.

"Because Noah is the legal heir to the Vale estate."

Adrian closed his eyes.

His brother had used children as keys to fortunes.

Grace to control Evelyn.

Noah to control the Vale assets.

His mother to control Adrian.

Every relationship had become leverage.

Adrian looked at Mrs. Hargrove.

"Does Noah know?"

She shook her head.

"He thinks Luca is his father."

Adrian stared at the screen.

Two children.

Both innocent.

Both trapped.

He looked at Evelyn.

"We bring them both home."

She nodded.

"Both."

That night, Adrian received another message from Detective Shaw.

WE HAVE A WARRANT APPLICATION UNDERWAY. DO NOT CONFRONT LUCA ALONE.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then typed:

TWO CHILDREN AT LAKE HOUSE. POSSIBLE HOSTAGES. URGENT.

He sent the address.

Then looked toward the window.

Morning was approaching.

And with it, the confrontation that would decide whether his family survived.
