Chapter 12 - THE WIFE WHO LEARNED TO SPEAK AGAIN

Evelyn did not return to the Moretti mansion immediately.

Adrian offered.

She refused.

Not because she didn't love him.

Because she needed time.

Three years of captivity had changed her.

She startled at sudden noises.

She apologized when she dropped things.

She asked permission before opening doors.

She sometimes woke convinced Luca was standing beside her bed.

Adrian wanted to protect her.

But he was learning that protection did not mean making decisions for her.

So he listened.

Evelyn chose a quiet apartment near Lake Michigan.

Grace had her own bedroom.

A small garden stood behind the building.

The windows faced the water.

Adrian visited regularly.

At first, he stayed only an hour.

Then two.

He brought groceries.

Helped assemble furniture.

Read bedtime stories.

Sometimes he sat on the floor while Grace built towers from wooden blocks.

Evelyn watched.

The man she remembered had been powerful.

Impatient.

Often absent.

The man sitting on the carpet was different.

He let Grace place a pink plastic crown on his head.

He listened when she explained why stuffed animals needed separate beds.

He learned how to braid her hair badly.

He apologized when he made mistakes.

One evening, Grace asked:

"Daddy, why didn't you come before?"

Adrian froze.

Evelyn looked up.

Grace continued:

"Mommy said you loved me."

Adrian knelt beside her.

"I did."

"Then why?"

His eyes filled.

"Because someone kept us apart."

Grace frowned.

"Who?"

Adrian took a breath.

"Someone who made very bad choices."

She considered this.

"Did you try?"

He nodded.

"Every day after I knew you were missing."

Grace looked at him.

Then hugged his neck.

"Okay."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Children could ask questions adults spent years avoiding.

And sometimes their forgiveness arrived before anyone felt worthy of it.

Later, Evelyn found Adrian standing on the balcony.

He looked exhausted.

"Are you all right?"

He shook his head.

"I missed everything."

She stood beside him.

"Not everything."

He looked at her.

"You missed her first steps," Evelyn said softly. "Her first words. Her first birthdays."

His eyes filled.

"But you didn't miss tonight."

He looked toward the bedroom.

Grace was asleep.

A small nightlight glowed beside her bed.

Evelyn continued.

"And you don't have to miss tomorrow."

Adrian took her hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said:

"I want to become someone you can trust again."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You don't have to become perfect."

He smiled sadly.

"Good."

She continued.

"But you have to be honest."

He nodded.

"And you have to let me make my own choices."

"Always."

She looked at him.

"Then maybe we can find our way back."

Adrian's eyes filled.

"I'd like that."

She leaned against him.

May you like

For the first time in three years, she did not flinch when he wrapped an arm around her.

And that small moment meant more than any promise he could have made.
