Chapter 14 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO BROUGHT THEM HOME

Grace turned three on a bright June morning.

Evelyn decorated the apartment with yellow balloons.

Teresa arrived carrying a handmade blanket.

Mrs. Hargrove brought a small wooden music box.

Adrian carried a cake he'd ordered from a bakery.

Grace stared at it.

"That's too big."

Adrian laughed.

"Too big?"

She nodded seriously.

"We need to share."

Evelyn smiled.

"That's the idea."

The party was small.

Warm.

Full of laughter.

No armed guards stood in the corners.

No whispered threats interrupted the celebration.

No one watched the doors.

For the first time, Adrian understood what a family gathering could feel like without fear.

Grace opened presents.

Played with balloons.

Ate too much cake.

Then fell asleep on the couch.

Teresa sat beside her.

Stroking her hair.

Evelyn watched them.

Her eyes filled.

Three years earlier, she'd believed Adrian was dead.

She'd believed Grace would grow up without knowing her father.

She'd believed the rest of her life would be spent obeying Luca.

Now the people she loved were gathered in one room.

Safe.

Together.

Later that evening, Adrian asked Evelyn to walk with him along the lake.

The sun was setting.

The water shimmered gold.

He seemed nervous.

She smiled.

"What is it?"

He stopped.

"Evelyn, I know we're already married."

She laughed.

"Yes, Adrian. I remember."

He smiled.

"But I don't think I ever gave you the marriage you deserved."

Her expression softened.

He continued.

"When we married, I promised to protect you."

His voice trembled.

"Then I built a life where danger followed us everywhere."

Evelyn took his hand.

"Adrian—"

"Let me finish."

She nodded.

He took a breath.

"I can't give you back the years we lost."

Tears filled his eyes.

"But I can promise that the years ahead will be different."

He reached into his pocket.

A small velvet box.

Inside was a simple gold ring.

No diamonds.

No extravagant display.

Just a narrow band engraved with three words.

I CHOOSE YOU.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Adrian smiled through tears.

"Will you marry me again?"

She stared.

"Not because of family expectations. Not because of business. Not because of fear."

He looked into her eyes.

"Because we love each other."

Evelyn began crying.

Then laughed.

"Yes."

Adrian exhaled.

"Yes?"

"Yes."

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

Then kissed her.

Gently.

Carefully.

As though both were learning love again.

When they returned to the apartment, Grace was awake.

She saw the ring.

Her eyes widened.

"Mommy got married?"

Evelyn laughed.

"Again."

Grace looked at Adrian.

"To Daddy?"

He nodded.

"To Daddy."

Grace considered this.

Then smiled.

"Good."

She hugged them both.

And whispered:

"Now nobody has to be lost anymore."

Adrian closed his eyes.

May you like

Evelyn held their daughter close.

And for a moment, the world felt perfectly still.
