Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO WALKED AWAY FROM THE THRONE

Adrian's decision shocked Chicago.

He announced that he would step away from the criminal organization that had defined his family for decades.

His captains protested.

Some called him weak.

Others believed he had lost his mind.

But Adrian had seen what unchecked power could do.

His brother had turned an entire family into hostages.

And Adrian could no longer pretend that fear was a safe foundation for love.

He worked with attorneys and independent managers to separate legitimate businesses from criminal operations.

He cooperated with lawful investigations.

He accepted that some of his past decisions might carry consequences.

The process was painful.

His reputation suffered.

His wealth decreased.

Several former associates abandoned him.

But each evening, he returned to the apartment near the lake.

Grace ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

He knelt.

Caught her.

Lifted her into his arms.

And suddenly the losses seemed smaller.

One afternoon, Evelyn found him sitting at the kitchen table.

He was reading financial documents.

His expression was tired.

"Bad day?" she asked.

He nodded.

"Very."

She sat across from him.

"Want to talk?"

He looked at her.

For years, he had kept every burden to himself.

He believed admitting uncertainty was weakness.

Now he took a breath.

"I'm afraid."

Evelyn stared.

"Of what?"

"That I won't know how to live without being the man everyone fears."

She reached across the table.

Took his hand.

"Then learn."

He smiled faintly.

"Just like that?"

"No."

She laughed softly.

"It'll be hard."

He looked at her.

"But worth it?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

That evening, Grace insisted they bake cookies.

Adrian had never baked anything in his life.

He measured flour incorrectly.

Dropped an egg.

Burned the first tray.

Grace laughed so hard she nearly fell off her chair.

Evelyn watched them.

Her heart felt full.

For years, she had believed happiness was something other people were allowed to have.

Now it lived in her kitchen.

In the smell of burned cookies.

In Grace's laughter.

In Adrian's embarrassed smile.

Later, after Grace fell asleep, Adrian stood beside Evelyn at the sink.

"I'm sorry about the cookies."

She laughed.

"They were terrible."

He smiled.

"I'll improve."

She turned toward him.

"You already have."

He looked at her.

For a moment, the room became quiet.

Then Evelyn leaned forward.

And kissed him.

Not because she was afraid.

Not because she owed him.

Because she wanted to.

Adrian froze.

Then kissed her back gently.

When they separated, his eyes were wet.

"Evelyn."

She smiled.

"Don't ruin it by making a speech."

He laughed.

May you like

"Yes, ma'am."

And for the first time in years, their marriage began to feel like something they were choosing together.
