Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

Adrian saw his mother again three days later.

Her name was Teresa Moretti.

She was seventy-two.

Her hair had turned almost completely white.

She sat in a wheelchair beside the window of a private medical facility.

When Adrian entered, she looked up.

For a moment, she seemed confused.

Then her eyes widened.

"Adrian?"

He stopped.

"Mom."

Her hand flew to her mouth.

"Oh, my boy."

He crossed the room.

Knelt beside her.

And embraced her.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Teresa cried against his shoulder.

Adrian held her carefully.

He remembered the last time he had seen her.

A hospital room.

A nurse telling him she was deteriorating.

Then the call announcing her death.

Now she was alive.

"How?" he whispered.

Teresa looked at him.

"Luca."

Her voice trembled.

"He told me you were dead."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Of course.

Another lie.

Another stolen relationship.

She continued.

"He said the family was gone. That I had to hide."

Adrian took her hand.

"I'm here."

She touched his face.

"You're real."

He nodded.

"I'm real."

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Then she asked:

"Where is Evelyn?"

Adrian smiled.

"Safe."

"And the child?"

He froze.

"You knew?"

Teresa nodded.

"Luca brought her once."

Her eyes filled.

"A beautiful little girl."

Adrian laughed through tears.

"Her name is Grace."

Teresa smiled.

"Grace."

He took out his phone.

Showed her a photograph.

Grace sat on Evelyn's lap, holding a stuffed rabbit.

Teresa began crying again.

"My granddaughter."

Adrian nodded.

"Your granddaughter."

He spent the afternoon beside her.

They spoke about the years they'd lost.

The lies.

The fear.

The loneliness.

Teresa told him how Luca had convinced her that Adrian was dead.

How he had isolated her.

How he controlled her visitors and correspondence.

Adrian listened.

He wanted to rage.

But his mother needed something else.

She needed him to stay.

So he did.

Later, Evelyn arrived with Grace.

The little girl approached Teresa cautiously.

"Are you Grandma?"

Teresa smiled through tears.

"Yes, sweetheart."

Grace looked at Adrian.

"Your mommy?"

He nodded.

"My mommy."

Grace considered this.

Then smiled.

"That's funny."

Everyone laughed.

Teresa opened her arms.

Grace climbed carefully onto her lap.

And for the first time in years, the Moretti family gathered without fear.

But healing was not simple.

Teresa had medical needs.

Evelyn had trauma.

Grace struggled with unfamiliar surroundings.

Adrian had to confront the damage caused by his own violent past.

The family had been reunited.

But they still had to learn how to live together.

That evening, Adrian stood outside the medical facility.

Evelyn joined him.

"How are you?" she asked.

He looked toward the window.

"I don't know."

She nodded.

"Me neither."

He took her hand.

For a moment, they stood in silence.

Then he said:

"I thought finding you would fix everything."

Evelyn looked at him.

"It doesn't."

He nodded.

"I know."

She squeezed his hand.

"But it's a beginning."

Adrian looked at her.

Then smiled faintly.

May you like

"A beginning."

And for the first time, he allowed himself to believe that might be enough.
