Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO KEPT THE KEYS

The first person who helped Adrian was not a guard.

Not a lawyer.

Not one of his loyal captains.

It was a seventy-year-old housekeeper named Mrs. Hargrove.

She entered the guest room carrying clean towels.

Adrian recognized her from the service corridor.

Her expression was severe.

But her eyes were alert.

She placed the towels on the bed.

Then whispered:

"Your wife has been waiting for you."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked toward the door.

"Don't speak loudly."

Evelyn stood.

"Margaret?"

The older woman nodded.

"I've done what I can."

Adrian looked between them.

"You know what's happening?"

Mrs. Hargrove's face tightened.

"I know enough."

She reached into her apron.

A small brass key appeared.

"This opens the service stairwell."

Adrian stared.

"Why are you helping us?"

Her eyes filled.

"Because I have watched that woman scrub floors until her hands bled."

She looked at Evelyn.

"And because I have grandchildren."

Adrian took the key.

"Where is Grace?"

Mrs. Hargrove hesitated.

"At the lake house."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"And my mother?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked away.

"Also there."

Silence.

Adrian felt his chest tighten.

His mother had died a year earlier.

He had attended the funeral.

He had seen the coffin.

Now another person was telling him she was alive.

He looked at Mrs. Hargrove.

"How?"

The older woman swallowed.

"Mr. Vale—Luca—has friends who can arrange documents."

Adrian stared.

"Medical records?"

"Yes."

"Death certificates?"

She nodded.

Adrian closed his eyes.

His brother had built an empire of false deaths.

Mrs. Hargrove continued.

"The lake house has private security. But the staff entrance is monitored by an old system."

Adrian looked up.

"Can you access it?"

She nodded.

"I have worked for the Vale family for twelve years."

Evelyn stared.

"Twelve?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked at her.

"Before Luca became Malcolm Vale, I worked for the real Malcolm Vale."

Adrian froze.

"The real Malcolm Vale?"

She nodded.

"He disappeared five years ago."

Adrian felt cold.

"Did Luca kill him?"

Mrs. Hargrove looked down.

"I don't know."

She reached into her pocket.

A folded photograph.

It showed a man standing beside Luca.

The resemblance was startling.

Same height.

Similar hair.

Similar build.

Adrian stared.

"Malcolm Vale looked like Luca."

Mrs. Hargrove nodded.

"Enough for someone who didn't know him well."

Adrian understood.

Luca had not merely invented a new identity.

He had taken someone else's.

The older woman continued.

"I've been collecting records."

She handed Adrian a small envelope.

Inside were copies of staff schedules, property records, and photographs.

"Why didn't you go to the police?" Adrian asked.

Her eyes filled.

"Because my grandson disappeared after I tried."

Silence.

Adrian stared.

"Where is he?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Evelyn began crying.

Mrs. Hargrove touched her shoulder.

"We have to stop him."

Adrian looked at the envelope.

Then at the key.

He had spent years believing his greatest strength was fear.

Now he realized Luca had used fear more effectively than he ever had.

The only way to defeat him was to break the silence.

Adrian reached for his phone.

He opened an encrypted contact.

Detective Rebecca Shaw.

A federal investigator who had once tried to examine Moretti shipping finances.

He typed a message.

I HAVE EVIDENCE OF KIDNAPPING, IDENTITY FRAUD, AND POSSIBLE HOMICIDE. I NEED A SECURE MEETING.

Then he sent the photographs.

Minutes later, his phone vibrated.

One message.

DON'T MOVE. WE'RE COMING.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

For the first time, hope entered her eyes.

But before he could speak, the door opened.

Luca stood in the doorway.

He looked at the brass key in Adrian's hand.

Then at Mrs. Hargrove.

His smile disappeared.

"Margaret."

The older woman went pale.

May you like

Luca stepped inside.

"I was wondering when you'd finally betray me."
