Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE MARCHETTI EMPIRE

The investigation into Daniel Cross revealed a financial network far more extensive than Nico expected.

Funds had moved through shell companies connected to freight contracts, real estate deals, and private security arrangements.

Some transactions were linked to Victor Saldana's organization.

Others involved companies controlled by individuals Nico had trusted for years.

The documents Elena preserved before the divorce helped investigators identify inconsistencies.

But they also exposed a deeper problem.

Nico's own organization had become so dependent on secrecy that fraudulent activity could continue without effective oversight.

For years, he'd believed loyalty meant silence.

Now silence had become the perfect hiding place for betrayal.

Detective Michael Torres led part of the financial investigation.

He was forty-eight, blunt, and unimpressed by Nico's reputation.

During one meeting, he placed several documents on the table.

“Mr. Marchetti, these transactions were approved by your office.”

Nico studied them.

“I didn't authorize the underlying conduct.”

“That's not the same as saying your systems prevented it.”

Nico looked up.

Torres continued.

“You controlled the organization. If you want to cooperate, we need complete records and honest answers.”

Nico nodded.

“Understood.”

The detective looked skeptical.

“Do you?”

Nico considered the question.

Then answered quietly.

“I'm beginning to.”

Over the following months, Nico worked with attorneys, independent accountants, and investigators.

The process was painful.

Several senior associates were implicated.

Others resigned.

Some legitimate businesses required restructuring.

Nico also faced scrutiny for his own role in activities he'd previously tolerated.

He could not simply declare himself reformed and expect everyone to forget the past.

He had to accept consequences.

The most difficult discovery involved Daniel Cross.

The financial director had not acted alone.

He'd been working with Nico's cousin, Rafael Marchetti.

Rafael had grown up beside Nico.

They'd attended the same schools.

Worked together.

Buried relatives together.

Nico trusted him almost as much as Ava.

Now the records suggested Rafael had provided confidential information to Daniel and Saldana.

Nico confronted him through a formal legal process.

Rafael denied involvement.

Then investigators presented additional evidence.

Communications.

Payments.

Access records.

The pattern was difficult to dismiss.

Nico felt physically ill.

For years, he'd believed betrayal came from enemies.

Now it was coming from inside the family.

One evening, Ava found him sitting alone in his office.

The desk was covered with files.

His wedding ring lay beside an untouched glass of bourbon.

She sat opposite him.

“How bad?”

He laughed bitterly.

“Worse than I hoped.”

Ava nodded.

“Rafael?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Ava asked, “Do you regret cooperating?”

Nico looked toward the window.

“No.”

“Even with everything you're losing?”

He considered the question.

Then shook his head.

“I already lost the most important thing because I tried to protect the empire through lies.”

His voice softened.

“I won't do it again.”

Ava looked at him.

“And Elena?”

Nico smiled sadly.

“She deserves time.”

Ava nodded.

“Good.”

He looked toward the city lights.

“For years, I thought love meant keeping everyone safe by deciding everything myself.”

His voice broke.

“Now I think love means telling the truth even when you're afraid of what someone might choose.”

Ava's eyes filled.

Then she smiled.

“That's the first intelligent thing you've said in months.”

Nico laughed.

May you like

For the first time in a long while, the sound felt real.
