Chapter 14 - THE SECOND PROPOSAL HE DIDN'T PLAN

Nico didn't intend to propose.

Not that evening.

Not at the little bookstore where they'd first met.

He'd spent months thinking about it.

Wondering whether Elena might someday want to marry him again.

But he was determined not to pressure her.

He wanted her to feel free to choose.

So when Elena invited him to the bookstore for dinner after closing, he assumed they were having another quiet date.

The shop looked almost exactly as it had eight years earlier.

Wooden shelves.

Warm lights.

A small table near the window.

And a green chair Elena always claimed was the most comfortable seat in Chicago.

Isabella was spending the evening with Ava, who had eagerly volunteered.

Nico arrived carrying flowers.

Elena smiled.

“Roses?”

He looked embarrassed.

“Too predictable?”

She laughed.

“Very.”

Then kissed him.

They ate takeout pasta from paper containers.

Talked about Isabella.

Discussed Elena's new literacy program.

Argued cheerfully about whether Nico should stop buying children's books faster than their daughter could grow into them.

After dessert, Elena became quiet.

Nico noticed.

“What's wrong?”

She smiled faintly.

“Nothing.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Elena.”

She laughed.

“Apparently you can still read me.”

“Sometimes.”

She looked around the bookstore.

“Do you remember the first time you came here?”

He smiled.

“It was raining.”

“You asked for a book about architecture.”

“And you told me my choice was terrible.”

She laughed.

“It was.”

He smiled.

“I came back because of you.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

For a moment, they sat quietly.

Then Elena reached into her bag.

She removed a small envelope.

Nico frowned.

“What's that?”

“Something I wrote.”

She handed it to him.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Dear Nico,

For a long time, I believed our marriage ended because I wasn't enough.

Then I learned you had lied to me because you were afraid.

That truth didn't erase the pain.

But over the past year, I've watched you do something I once thought impossible.

You've listened.

You've apologized without demanding forgiveness.

You've allowed me to make decisions you might not have chosen.

And you've become the kind of father Isabella deserves.

Nico's hands began shaking.

He continued.

I don't want our old marriage back.

His heart tightened.

Then he read the next sentence.

I want something better.

Tears filled his eyes.

Something honest.

Something freely chosen.

Something where neither of us has to hide behind fear.

If you want that too, I'd like to try again.

Nico looked up.

Elena was crying.

He stood.

“Elena.”

She smiled through tears.

“Yes?”

He moved toward her.

Then stopped.

“May I hug you?”

She laughed.

“Yes, Nico.”

He pulled her into his arms.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he whispered, “I love you.”

She held him tighter.

“I love you too.”

He stepped back.

For a moment, he looked overwhelmed.

Then he reached into his coat pocket.

Elena froze.

“Nico.”

He looked startled.

“What?”

“What's in your pocket?”

He sighed.

“I wasn't planning to use it tonight.”

Her eyes widened.

He removed a small velvet box.

Inside was a simple gold ring.

Not the enormous diamond he'd given her years earlier.

That ring had been part of the life they'd lost.

This one was different.

Delicate.

Elegant.

A small sapphire surrounded by tiny diamonds.

Nico looked at her.

“Elena, I'm not asking you to forget what happened.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I'm asking whether we can build something new.”

He knelt.

Not because he wanted to impress her.

Because for the first time, he understood that asking mattered.

“Elena Brooks, will you marry me again?”

She covered her mouth.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she laughed through tears.

“You're impossible.”

He smiled.

“Frequently.”

She knelt beside him.

Nico looked surprised.

“Elena?”

She took his hands.

“If we're doing this again, we're doing it as equals.”

His eyes filled.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Then she smiled.

“Yes, Nico. I'll marry you again.”

He laughed.

Pulled her close.

And kissed her.

Outside, rain began tapping against the bookstore windows.

The same sound that had accompanied their first meeting.

But this time, there were no lies waiting behind the happiness.

May you like

Only two people choosing one another with open eyes.
