Chapter 13 - THE VERDICT THAT ENDED THE OLD NICO

The criminal proceedings connected to Daniel Cross and Rafael Marchetti reached a verdict when Isabella was seven months old.

The investigation had uncovered extensive fraud, unauthorized transfers, obstruction, and evidence relating to the attack on Elena.

Several defendants were convicted on multiple charges.

Other proceedings continued.

Nico's own businesses remained under legal and financial scrutiny as he completed a substantial restructuring away from unlawful operations.

The process cost him power.

Money.

And some relationships he'd spent decades protecting.

But it also changed him.

He stopped measuring his worth by the number of armed men who answered his calls.

Stopped treating fear as respect.

And began building a life where his daughter could grow up without inheriting the violence that had defined his childhood.

Elena testified about the attack and the records she'd preserved.

She spoke carefully.

Described what she remembered.

Acknowledged the gaps caused by her injury.

And refused to speculate beyond the evidence.

During cross-examination, an attorney suggested her former husband's influence had shaped her account.

Elena looked directly at him.

“My testimony is based on what I personally observed and the documents I preserved before we divorced.”

The attorney frowned.

“Your husband—”

“Ex-husband,” Elena corrected calmly.

The courtroom went quiet.

She continued.

“And my relationship with Nico does not change the records.”

Afterward, Nico told her he was proud of her.

Elena smiled.

“I'm proud of myself too.”

He laughed softly.

“Good.”

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.

“Mr. Marchetti, do you regret the decisions that led to your divorce?”

Nico considered the question.

“Yes.”

“Would you say your former wife saved your empire?”

He looked toward Elena.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

The reporter frowned.

“Why not?”

“Because the empire I built needed to change. Elena helped bring important facts to light, but she isn't responsible for repairing my mistakes.”

He paused.

“That's my responsibility.”

Another reporter shouted, “Are you planning to remarry her?”

Nico smiled faintly.

“That's a decision for two people, not a press conference.”

He walked away.

Elena waited beside Ava.

Isabella slept in a stroller.

When Nico approached, Ava smiled.

“You handled that well.”

He laughed.

“High praise.”

Elena looked up.

“Ready?”

Nico nodded.

“Where are we going?”

She smiled.

“Home.”

He stopped.

For a moment, the word felt enormous.

Home.

Not his mansion.

Not his office.

Not the world he'd spent years controlling.

The small house Elena had recently rented near the lake.

The place where Isabella's toys filled the living room.

Where the kitchen smelled of coffee.

Where he was welcome because Elena wanted him there.

He smiled.

“Yes.”

Then he took the diaper bag from Ava.

May you like

And followed the two women he loved toward the car.
