Chapter 5 - THE LETTER HE NEVER SENT

Nico had written Elena seventeen letters after the divorce.

He never mailed them.

Each one began differently.

I'm sorry.

I lied.

You deserve the truth.

I don't know how to live without you.

Most ended the same way.

I love you.

He kept them in a locked drawer inside his bedroom.

The room he'd once shared with Elena.

He hadn't changed anything.

Her books remained beside the bed.

Her blue sweater hung inside the closet.

The small ceramic bowl she made during a pottery class still sat on the dresser.

He'd told himself keeping those objects was harmless.

Now he wondered whether he'd simply been refusing to accept that she had left.

Three days after Elena regained consciousness, Nico returned home for the first time since the hospital call.

Ava met him in the hallway.

“You look terrible.”

He laughed once.

“Thank you.”

She followed him upstairs.

“Have you eaten?”

“Not much.”

“Nico.”

He turned.

“What?”

Ava looked at him carefully.

“You need to stop punishing yourself by refusing to function.”

His expression tightened.

“She was hurt because of me.”

“She's hurt because someone attacked her.”

“I created the danger.”

“You were part of it. But that doesn't mean you get to turn her recovery into a story about your guilt.”

He looked away.

Ava continued.

“Elena needs practical support. Truth. And space to make her own decisions.”

Nico nodded slowly.

“I know.”

She hesitated.

“There's something else.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“She asked about the divorce.”

His heart stopped.

“What did she ask?”

“Whether you still believe the marriage was a lie.”

Nico covered his face.

For months, he'd imagined Elena asking that question.

Now she had.

And he wasn't there to answer.

“What did you tell her?”

Ava swallowed.

“That she deserves to hear the truth from you.”

Nico sat down.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he opened the drawer.

Removed the letters.

And placed them on the bed.

Ava stared.

“What are those?”

“Things I should've said.”

She picked up one envelope.

Then stopped.

“Are these for Elena?”

He nodded.

“Why didn't you send them?”

“Because I thought contacting her would put her in danger.”

Ava looked at him.

“Nico.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

She sat beside him.

“You keep making decisions for her because you're afraid of what happens if she chooses differently.”

He looked up.

His sister's eyes were filled with tears.

“But love doesn't work that way.”

Nico stared at the letters.

Then made a decision.

He would not send seventeen emotional confessions into Elena's hospital room.

He would not overwhelm her with guilt.

He would not make her responsible for comforting him.

Instead, he would write one clear letter.

No excuses.

No manipulation.

Just the truth.

He sat at his desk.

And began.

Elena,

Our marriage was real.

Every day of it.

I lied because I was afraid and believed I could protect you by making you leave.

I was wrong.

I made that decision without giving you the truth or allowing you to choose.

You did not deserve what I said.

You do not owe me forgiveness.

I will cooperate with investigators and take responsibility for my choices.

If you ever want to speak, I will answer honestly.

If you don't, I will respect that too.

I love you.

Nico.

He read it twice.

Then gave it to Ava.

“Only if Elena wants it.”

Ava nodded.

For the first time in three months, Nico felt he'd done something that wasn't another attempt to control the outcome.

He had told the truth.

May you like

The rest belonged to Elena.
