Chapter 6 - THE BABY WHO CHANGED THE RULES

Elena was discharged from the hospital after her medical team determined she could continue recovering outside the hospital with appropriate follow-up.

Her head injury required rest and monitoring.

Her pregnancy required continued prenatal care.

And the circumstances of the attack remained under investigation.

She returned to a quiet apartment arranged through her own attorney and support network.

Ava visited regularly.

Elena's friend Rachel brought meals.

Her obstetrician coordinated follow-up appointments.

For the first time in months, Elena allowed people to help without pretending she could manage everything alone.

But she remained cautious.

Nico had immense resources.

He could purchase buildings.

Hire security firms.

Arrange transportation.

And solve practical problems with one phone call.

That power had once made Elena feel protected.

Then it made her feel invisible.

Now she wanted a different kind of security.

One built on information and choice.

Her attorney, Katherine Bell, helped her discuss co-parenting arrangements and appropriate legal protections.

Elena wanted Nico to have the opportunity to be involved in their child's life.

But she wasn't willing to surrender decisions simply because he was wealthy or powerful.

One afternoon, Ava arrived carrying a white envelope.

“Elena.”

She looked up.

“What is it?”

“A letter from Nico.”

Elena went still.

Ava continued.

“He asked me to give it to you only if you wanted it.”

Elena stared at the envelope.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she held out her hand.

“I'll read it.”

Ava nodded.

And left her alone.

Elena opened the letter.

She read the first sentence.

Our marriage was real.

Her breath stopped.

She read it again.

Then continued.

By the time she reached the end, tears were running down her face.

For three months, she'd carried Nico's cruel words like a stone inside her chest.

Every happy memory felt contaminated.

Every photograph seemed false.

Every promise became something she questioned.

Now he was saying he'd lied.

That he'd loved her.

That he'd pushed her away because he believed she was in danger.

Elena wanted to scream.

She wanted to throw the letter.

She wanted to call him and ask why he hadn't trusted her with the truth.

Instead, she sat on the couch and cried.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because nothing was simple anymore.

That evening, she called her therapist, Dr. Maya Chen.

They discussed the letter.

The divorce.

The pregnancy.

The fear.

Elena admitted something she'd been afraid to say aloud.

“I still love him.”

Dr. Chen nodded.

“That feeling doesn't require you to reconcile.”

“I know.”

“You can love someone and still need evidence that a relationship will be safe for you.”

Elena wiped her face.

“I don't know whether I can trust him.”

“Then you don't have to decide today.”

The words relieved her.

For years, Nico had made decisions quickly.

Sometimes beautifully.

Sometimes disastrously.

Now Elena could take her time.

Two weeks later, she agreed to meet him.

Not at his mansion.

Not at her apartment.

At a quiet office used for family mediation.

Nico arrived early.

He wore a navy suit.

No armed entourage inside.

No dramatic entrance.

When Elena walked into the room, he stood.

Then stopped.

His eyes moved toward her stomach.

She was beginning to show.

For a moment, his face crumpled.

“Elena.”

Her name came out like a prayer.

She looked at him.

“Nico.”

He took one step forward.

Then stopped himself.

“May I hug you?”

Her eyes filled.

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Nico nodded immediately.

“Of course.”

They sat opposite each other.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Elena placed his letter on the table.

“I read it.”

Nico's hands tightened.

“I know.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Was it true?”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

“Then why did you let me believe I was never loved?”

Nico closed his eyes.

Because that was the question he had no answer to that could make what he'd done acceptable.

Finally, he whispered, “Because I was afraid.”

Elena stared.

Then said quietly, “So was I.”

May you like

And for the first time, Nico understood how much fear he'd caused while trying to protect her from someone else's.
