Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TO STAY

Nico Marchetti had commanded hundreds of men.

He'd negotiated multimillion-dollar agreements.

Survived violent rivalries.

And made decisions that affected entire businesses.

But nothing prepared him for a newborn who refused to sleep.

Isabella Rose was five weeks old when Nico discovered that wealth couldn't negotiate with a baby.

At two in the morning, she cried.

At three, she cried again.

At four, she decided everyone in the apartment should remain awake.

Nico stood beside her bassinet.

“Little one,” he whispered, “we need to discuss your schedule.”

She cried louder.

Elena laughed from the bed.

“Nico.”

He looked back.

“What?”

“She's five weeks old.”

“I know.”

“She doesn't have a schedule you can renegotiate.”

He sighed.

“I suspected that.”

Elena laughed harder.

For the first time in months, laughter felt easy.

After leaving the hospital, Elena had returned to her apartment with Isabella.

Nico respected her decision.

He visited according to their agreed arrangements.

Learned how to change diapers.

Prepared bottles when appropriate.

Attended pediatric appointments when invited.

And discovered that being a father wasn't a role someone else could manage for him.

He had to show up.

Consistently.

Without applause.

Without expecting Elena to praise him for doing ordinary parenting tasks.

One afternoon, he arrived carrying a bag of groceries.

Elena opened the door.

“You're early.”

He looked at his watch.

“Five minutes.”

She smiled.

“That's early.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

He entered.

Isabella slept in her bassinet.

Nico placed the groceries in the kitchen.

Then turned toward Elena.

“How are you?”

“Tired.”

He nodded.

“Can I take over for a while?”

She hesitated.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

He washed his hands.

Picked up the baby when she stirred.

And walked slowly around the living room.

Elena watched.

For six years, she'd loved this man.

Then she'd spent three months believing the marriage was a lie.

Now she was seeing him become a father.

He wasn't perfect.

He made mistakes.

Sometimes he tried too hard.

Sometimes his old need for control returned.

But he apologized.

Listened.

And tried again.

One evening, after Isabella fell asleep, Nico sat beside Elena on the couch.

They were both exhausted.

He looked at her.

“Can I ask you something?”

She nodded.

“Of course.”

“Do you ever regret marrying me?”

Elena was quiet for a long moment.

Then answered honestly.

“No.”

Nico stopped breathing.

She continued.

“I regret how our marriage ended.”

He looked down.

“But I don't regret loving you.”

Tears filled his eyes.

She smiled sadly.

“We had good years, Nico.”

He nodded.

“We did.”

“They were real.”

His voice broke.

“Yes.”

She looked toward the bassinet.

“And now we have Isabella.”

Nico smiled.

“Yes.”

For a while, they sat quietly.

Then Elena said something that surprised him.

“I think I'd like to go on a date.”

He looked up.

“With whom?”

She laughed.

“Don't be ridiculous.”

His eyes widened.

“Elena?”

She smiled.

“With you.”

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then he laughed through tears.

“Really?”

“One date.”

He nodded.

“Of course.”

“No expectations.”

“Understood.”

She smiled.

“And no bodyguards hovering beside the table.”

He laughed.

“I'll arrange discretion.”

Elena leaned against him.

For a moment, he remained still.

Then she rested her head on his shoulder.

He closed his eyes.

The most feared man in Chicago had spent years believing he could control every outcome.

Now he understood that the future he wanted most could only be built through patience.

One ordinary day at a time.
