Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE BOARDROOM

At thirty-four weeks pregnant, Claire Bennett Vale entered Bennett Harbor Logistics' headquarters wearing a navy maternity suit.

The boardroom fell silent.

Eleven directors stared.

Several had expected her to resign.

Others believed she would be too emotionally unstable to manage the company.

Claire placed her handbag on the table.

Then sat at the head.

"Good morning."

The chairman cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Vale, we're concerned about your health."

"Thank you. My medical team is monitoring me."

"We've received reports—"

"From whom?"

The chairman hesitated.

"Confidential sources."

Claire smiled faintly.

"Then I suggest we begin with facts instead of rumors."

Rebecca stood beside her.

She presented the forged proxy.

The medical petition.

The unauthorized collateral agreements.

Then the records recovered from Pier Nine.

One by one, the directors realized what had happened.

Graham Vale had attempted to use Bennett Harbor as collateral for fraudulent loans.

Marissa had helped obtain confidential records.

And Adrian had approved documents he had no right to authorize.

Claire looked around the table.

"My father built this company with twelve employees and one borrowed truck."

Her voice remained steady.

"He believed that a business should provide stability for the people who work there."

She placed one hand over her belly.

"I intend to preserve that legacy."

The chairman nodded.

"What are you proposing?"

"An independent forensic audit. Immediate suspension of all unauthorized transfers. Removal of Vale-affiliated contractors under investigation. And a restructuring plan that protects employee wages."

One director frowned.

"That's aggressive."

Claire looked at him.

"So was forging my signature."

Silence.

Then another director spoke.

"I support the motion."

A second followed.

Then a third.

Within twenty minutes, the board approved every proposal.

Claire remained seated after the meeting ended.

Rebecca approached.

"You did it."

Claire looked toward the window.

Chicago stretched beneath a gray winter sky.

"No," she said quietly.

"We've only started."

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel Mercer.

We found the original surveillance recording from the night your father died.

Claire's heart stopped.

May you like

A second message appeared.

Marissa was there.
