Chapter 7 - THE MAFIA KING WHO BEGGED FOR FORGIVENESS

Adrian returned to his mansion alone.

The house was silent.

Claire's shoes were gone from the hallway.

Her favorite books had disappeared from the study.

The nursery remained unfinished.

A rocking chair stood beside the window.

Tiny clothes hung inside the wardrobe.

On the dresser lay a framed ultrasound photograph.

Adrian picked it up.

Their son.

He remembered the night Claire had told him she was pregnant.

She had stood in the bathroom doorway holding the test.

Her eyes were shining.

He had stared at the two pink lines.

Then dropped to his knees.

He had cried because he never believed someone like him deserved a family.

Now he understood that deserving one and protecting one were entirely different things.

His phone rang.

Graham.

Adrian answered.

"Where are you?"

"Adrian, we need to talk."

"Did you send men to the lake house?"

Silence.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Graham."

"Your wife has documents that could destroy us."

"Did you send them?"

Graham sighed.

"You're becoming emotional."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Answer me."

"Claire should have stayed out of business."

Adrian felt something inside him turn cold.

He had spent years making excuses for men like Graham.

Calling violence necessary.

Calling intimidation protection.

Calling corruption loyalty.

Now those excuses had nearly killed his wife and unborn child.

"No more," Adrian said.

Graham laughed.

"What?"

"No more."

He ended the call.

Then Adrian contacted his attorney.

Not the family lawyer who had spent years hiding problems.

An independent criminal defense attorney.

He arranged to preserve company records.

He contacted investigators.

And for the first time, he began cooperating with the authorities against his own organization.

He knew the consequences.

Prison.

Financial ruin.

The loss of his empire.

But he had already lost the one person who made any of it meaningful.

Three days later, he received a message from Claire.

I know you're cooperating.

He stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Do it because it's right. Not because you think it will bring me back.

Adrian sat down slowly.

He typed:

I understand.

May you like

Then, after a long pause:

I'm sorry I understood too late.
