Chapter 11 - THE BABY WHO ARRIVED EARLY

At thirty-six weeks, Claire woke to a sharp pain across her abdomen.
She lay still.
Waited.
The pain faded.
Then returned.
She checked the clock.
3:18 a.m.
Seven minutes later, another contraction came.
Claire reached for her phone.
Called her obstetric team.
Then Rebecca.
By four thirty, she was at the hospital.
Dr. Hannah Brooks examined her.
"Claire, you're in labor."
Claire stared.
"But he's early."
"I know. We'll monitor both of you closely."
Fear rose in her throat.
"Is he okay?"
"His heartbeat is reassuring right now."
Claire closed her eyes.
She wanted to be brave.
Instead, she was terrified.
Rebecca held her hand.
"You can do this."
Claire nodded.
Then, at six fifteen, she made a decision.
"Call Adrian."
Rebecca looked surprised.
"Are you sure?"
Claire nodded.
"He's the baby's father."
Adrian arrived forty minutes later.
His hair was disheveled.
His coat was buttoned incorrectly.
He looked as though he'd run through the snow.
When he entered the room, he stopped.
"Claire."
She looked at him.
"He's coming."
Adrian's face changed.
He approached slowly.
"Can I stay?"
Claire studied him.
Then nodded.
"Yes. But this is about the baby."
"I understand."
He took a chair beside her.
When another contraction came, Claire gripped the railing.
Adrian reached toward her.
Then stopped.
"Can I hold your hand?"
She nodded.
His fingers closed around hers.
For the next several hours, they barely spoke.
There was no room for arguments.
No room for excuses.
Only the steady rhythm of labor and the hope that their son would arrive safely.
At 11:42 a.m., Thomas Bennett Vale was born.
Six pounds, one ounce.
Dark hair.
Tiny hands.
A strong first cry.
Claire began sobbing.
Adrian stood beside her, tears streaming down his face.
The nurse placed the baby against Claire's chest.
She stared at him.
"Hello, sweetheart."
Adrian leaned closer.
"He's beautiful."
Claire looked at him.
For one moment, they shared something no betrayal could erase.
Their son.
But Claire knew that becoming parents did not magically repair their marriage.
And Adrian seemed to understand it too.
He kissed the baby's forehead.
Then stepped back.
"Thank you for letting me be here."
Claire nodded.
"He's your son."
Adrian looked at her.
"And you're his mother."
May you like
Their eyes met.
For the first time, those words sounded like a partnership rather than a claim.
