Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Graham Vale was arrested on a cold Tuesday morning.

Federal agents entered his downtown office with warrants covering financial fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction-related offenses.

The investigation expanded quickly.

Accounts were frozen.

Documents seized.

Several executives agreed to cooperate.

Marissa was questioned.

Adrian submitted records that implicated members of his own organization.

The empire he had spent twenty years building began collapsing.

But Adrian did not interfere.

He had finally understood that protecting Claire meant allowing the truth to exist, even when it destroyed him.

One evening, Rebecca visited Claire with an update.

"Graham's attorney is discussing a plea agreement."

Claire nodded.

"And Marissa?"

"She may face charges related to the records she helped obtain."

Claire looked away.

She had imagined revenge would feel satisfying.

Instead, it felt exhausting.

Rebecca sat beside her.

"How are you?"

Claire smiled sadly.

"Pregnant. Tired. Angry."

"Anything else?"

Claire looked toward the nursery.

"Afraid."

Rebecca squeezed her hand.

"That's understandable."

Claire swallowed.

"What if Adrian tries to take the baby after he's born?"

"Your attorneys are preparing the appropriate custody arrangements. We'll make sure any decisions are handled through the court."

Claire nodded.

Then her phone rang.

Adrian.

She hesitated.

Rebecca stood.

"I'll give you privacy."

Claire answered.

"Hello."

Adrian's voice sounded tired.

"Claire."

"What do you need?"

"I wanted to tell you something before you hear it from someone else."

Her stomach tightened.

"What?"

"I'm stepping down from the remaining companies under investigation."

Claire closed her eyes.

"And?"

"I'm cooperating fully."

"Even if it means prison?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Claire looked at the tiny blue stocking hanging above the fireplace.

"Why?"

Adrian's voice broke.

"Because I finally understand that loving you doesn't mean keeping you at any cost."

Tears filled her eyes.

He continued.

"It means becoming someone our son won't be ashamed of."

Claire couldn't speak.

Then Adrian whispered, "I know I may never get you back."

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know what happens to us."

"I understand."

"But I want our son to have a father who tells him the truth."

Adrian began crying.

"I promise."

Claire swallowed.

"Don't promise me, Adrian."

May you like

She looked toward the nursery.

"Show him."
