Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO LEARNED TO WAIT

Thomas spent several days in the hospital because he had arrived early.
Claire remained close to him.
Adrian visited during agreed hours.
He brought diapers.
Clean clothes.
Food Claire actually wanted to eat.
He learned how to hold his son.
How to change him.
How to recognize when he was hungry.
And how to sit quietly without trying to control everything.
The first time Thomas fell asleep against Adrian's chest, the powerful businessman began crying.
Claire watched from the doorway.
Adrian didn't notice her.
He whispered to the baby.
"I'm going to do better than I did before you got here."
Claire felt her throat tighten.
Later, Adrian approached her.
"I've signed the separation agreement."
She looked up.
"Already?"
"Rebecca sent the final version."
"And the company?"
"I've withdrawn every claim."
Claire nodded.
"Thank you."
He hesitated.
"I also gave investigators the records they requested."
"Even the ones that could hurt you?"
"Especially those."
Claire studied him.
"Why?"
Adrian looked toward the nursery.
"Because I don't want our son growing up believing that being powerful means never admitting you're wrong."
Claire looked down.
For years, she had begged Adrian to become accountable.
Now he was finally beginning.
But she wasn't ready to forgive him.
And she didn't have to be.
"Good," she said quietly.
Adrian nodded.
Then he left.
Without asking for a kiss.
Without demanding reassurance.
Without turning his apology into another obligation.

Claire watched him walk down the hallway.
And wondered whether the man she had once loved was finally becoming someone she could respect again.
