Chapter 9 - THE KISS NEITHER OF THEM EXPECTED

Sophie was found alive two days later.
Police located her at a rented property outside Chicago after tracing the vehicle seen in the parking garage.
She had been frightened and threatened.
But she was safe.
Emily ran toward her in the hospital corridor.
“Sophie!”
Her sister burst into tears.
They held each other.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Alexander stood nearby.
Watching.
When Sophie finally looked up, she whispered, “They wanted Mom's folder.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Sophie began crying again.
“I didn't tell them anything.”
Emily held her tighter.
“You did exactly what you needed to survive.”
Alexander looked away.
He had spent years believing money could solve most problems.
Now he understood that sometimes the most important thing he could do was help people feel safe enough to breathe.
---
Weeks later, after the immediate danger had passed, Emily found Alexander in the garden.
He stood beside the roses.
The evening air was cool.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
He turned.
“Emily.”
She smiled faintly.
“You know you can call me Alexander.”
She laughed softly.
“I know.”
He looked at her.
“How's Sophie?”
“Better.”
“Good.”
Emily stepped closer.
“I wanted to thank you.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You don't owe me anything.”
“I know.”
She smiled.
“That's why I wanted to say it.”
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Emily reached for his hand.
Alexander looked down.
His expression softened.
“Emily.”
She stepped closer.
He hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
And kissed him.
It was gentle.
Brief.
Unexpected.
When they pulled apart, Alexander rested his forehead against hers.
“I don't want you to feel pressured.”
Emily smiled.
“I don't.”
He took a breath.
“Then I'd like to take you to dinner.”
She laughed softly.
“A real date?”
“A real date.”
She smiled.
“Then ask me again after I'm no longer working for you.”
Alexander nodded.
May you like
“Fair.”
And for the first time, Emily saw him smile without the weight of the world on his shoulders.
