Chapter 10 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE WHITMORE DEVELOPMENT

The investigation into Charles Sterling expanded quickly.

The documents Margaret Hayes had preserved revealed years of fraudulent contracts.

Inflated invoices.

Shell companies.

False consulting fees.

And deliberate attempts to hide losses from investors.

Alexander cooperated with authorities.

He provided internal records.

Authorized independent audits.

And suspended executives implicated in the misconduct.

The consequences were severe.

Whitmore Development lost major investors.

Several projects were delayed.

The company's valuation fell.

And Alexander's reputation suffered.

One evening, Daniel entered his office.

“Sir, the board wants an emergency meeting.”

Alexander nodded.

“I expected that.”

Daniel hesitated.

“They may ask you to step down.”

Alexander looked toward the city.

For years, he had believed the company was his greatest achievement.

Now he wondered how much of that achievement had depended on things he had failed to see.

He turned toward Daniel.

“If stepping down is necessary to restore trust, I'll do it.”

Daniel stared.

“Sir?”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“I should have been paying attention.”

He looked toward the folder on his desk.

Margaret Hayes had tried to warn the company years earlier.

Nobody had listened.

This time, Alexander intended to make sure the truth was heard.
