Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT ALEXANDER ALMOST LOST HER
The final threat came unexpectedly.
Emily was leaving an evening class when a dark sedan pulled alongside the curb.
A man stepped out.
“Emily Hayes?”
She stopped.
Something about his voice frightened her.
She turned toward the building.
The man followed.
“Miss Hayes, we need to talk.”
Emily reached for her phone.
Then he grabbed her arm.
She screamed.
A security guard from the training center rushed toward them.
The man released her and fled.
Emily stumbled backward.
Her heart pounded.
She called the police.
Then Alexander.
He answered immediately.
“Emily?”
Her voice shook.
“Alexander.”
He went still.
“What happened?”
She began crying.
“Someone tried to grab me.”
Alexander's voice changed.
“Where are you?”
She told him.
He took a breath.
“Stay with the security guard. I'm coming.”
When he arrived, Emily was sitting beside a police officer.
Her face was pale.
Alexander stopped in front of her.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
He crouched.
“May I hold you?”
She nodded.

He wrapped his arms around her.
And for the first time, Alexander Whitmore understood what it meant to love someone without believing he could control every danger around them.
