Emily resigned from the Whitmore household the following month.
Not because Alexander asked her to.
Because she wanted to build a career of her own.
She enrolled in a professional training program for property management.
Eleanor helped her prepare applications.
Sophie returned to nursing school.
And Alexander supported the investigation without asking Emily to remain close to him.
They began dating slowly.
Coffee.
Dinner.
Walks along the lake.
Ordinary things.
Things Alexander had rarely made time for before.
One evening, Emily asked him a question.
“Do you miss the company?”
He looked at her.
“Sometimes.”
“Do you regret stepping away?”
Alexander considered it.
“No.”
She smiled.
“Why?”
He looked toward the water.
“Because I spent years building something enormous without noticing what was happening inside it.”
Emily took his hand.
He continued.
“I don't want to make that mistake again.”
She smiled.
“Then don't.”
Alexander laughed softly.
“Simple advice.”
“Usually the best kind.”
He looked at her.
