Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE MAFIA BOSS CHOSE MERCY

Trevor Ashford tried to disappear.
He withdrew money.
Canceled meetings.
Booked a private flight.
But the investigation had already reached the authorities.
A warrant was issued in connection with financial fraud.
Philippe learned about Trevor's attempted departure from Lorenzo.
For a moment, the old instincts returned.
He knew men who could stop Trevor.
Men who would ask no questions.
Men who would make sure he never boarded a plane.
Philippe stood beside his office window.
He thought about Alessia.
About her final argument with him.
About the way she'd signed:
This isn't your world. These are real people.
He closed his eyes.
Then called his attorney.
“Give everything to the investigators.”
The attorney hesitated.
“Everything?”
Philippe looked toward the city.
“Everything.”
That evening, Haven arrived at his office.
She found him sitting alone.
He looked exhausted.
What happened? she asked.
Philippe signed:
Trevor is being investigated.
Haven nodded.
And Bianca?
He looked away.
The records implicate her foundation.
Haven sat beside him.
Are you okay?
Philippe gave a bitter smile.
My sister is dead. My stepmother may have helped steal money from the people Alessia wanted to protect. And I spent seven years believing the wrong people.
Haven watched him.
Then signed:
You can't change seven years ago.
He nodded.
But you can decide what kind of man you are tonight.
Philippe looked at her.
I wanted to hurt Trevor.
Haven didn't flinch.
Did you?
He shook his head.
I called the authorities instead.
Haven's expression softened.
Then Alessia would be proud of that choice.
Philippe stared.
His eyes filled.
For years, people had praised his power.
His ruthlessness.
His ability to inspire fear.
But nobody had ever told him he was worthy of pride for choosing restraint.
He looked at Haven.
Then signed:
May I hold your hand?
She smiled.
Yes.
May you like
He took her hand.
And for the first time in years, Philippe Ferraro felt that mercy might require more courage than revenge.
