Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO ASK

Philippe had spent most of his life giving orders.

People obeyed.

Doors opened.

Problems disappeared.

But loving Haven required something different.

Patience.

Listening.

And the willingness to hear no.

One evening, they walked through Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The city glittered across the river.

Philippe signed:

May I ask you something?

Haven smiled.

You just did.

He laughed.

Would you consider having dinner with me tomorrow?

She raised an eyebrow.

We've had dinner many times.

Not as friends.

Haven stopped.

Philippe looked suddenly nervous.

As a date.

She stared at him.

For months, their relationship had grown through shared grief, difficult truths, and ordinary conversations.

He had never pressured her.

Never assumed her gratitude meant affection.

Never treated his help as something she owed him for.

Haven smiled.

I was wondering when you'd ask.

Philippe blinked.

Really?

She nodded.

You are surprisingly slow for a man who controls half the waterfront.

He laughed.

I wanted to be sure.

Haven stepped closer.

Then ask one more question.

Philippe studied her.

May I kiss you?

Haven smiled.

Yes.

He kissed her beneath the lights of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Gently.

Without an audience.

Without expectation.

When they separated, Haven rested her forehead against his.

Philippe signed:

Was that okay?

She laughed.

You ask a lot of questions.

He smiled.

I'm learning.

May you like

Haven kissed him again.

And for the first time in years, Philippe Ferraro felt that love might be something he could receive without controlling it.
