Chapter 2 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO KNEW HER LANGUAGE

By Monday morning, the video had reached nearly half a million views.

Someone had filmed Bianca's speech.

The recording showed Haven standing alone while guests laughed.

Then Philippe rising and signing to her.

The clip ended before they left the ballroom.

The caption read:

MAFIA HEIR HUMILIATES STEPMOTHER AFTER SHE MOCKS DEAF WAITRESS.

Haven hated every word.

Not because the description was entirely wrong.

Because once again, strangers were turning her life into entertainment.

At the diner, customers stared.

Some smiled sympathetically.

Others tried to communicate through exaggerated gestures.

One woman touched Haven's shoulder without permission and began speaking loudly.

Haven stepped away.

Pearl intercepted the woman with a menu.

Then she returned to Haven and wrote:

YOU DON'T OWE STRANGERS YOUR STORY.

Haven smiled gratefully.

Her phone vibrated.

An email from Trevor Ashford.

Payment has been processed. We request that you refrain from further public statements regarding Saturday's private family gathering.

Haven checked her bank account.

Two thousand dollars had arrived.

She replied:

I have made no public statements. Please direct further communication to my attorney if necessary.

She did not have an attorney.

Yet.

That afternoon, a woman in a gray pantsuit entered the diner.

She approached Haven with a friendly smile and signed:

My name is Sofia Bennett. I work for Philippe Ferraro. May we speak?

Haven studied her.

About what?

The video. And your privacy.

They sat in a booth.

Sofia explained that the Ferraro family's legal team had requested removal of unauthorized recordings where possible. She also provided contact information for a lawyer independent of Philippe's businesses.

Haven appreciated that distinction.

Does he always send people to solve strangers' problems? she asked.

Sofia smiled.

No. Usually he sends people to solve his own.

Haven raised an eyebrow.

Sofia hesitated.

He asked me to make sure you weren't being pressured. Nothing more.

Haven considered.

Tell him thank you. But I can speak for myself.

Sofia's smile widened.

He said you would say that.

Across Manhattan, Philippe Ferraro watched the video on his office computer.

He had watched it six times.

Not the humiliation.

He couldn't bear that part.

He watched the moment Haven lifted her chin after Bianca called her simple.

The moment she refused to cry.

The moment she signed back to him.

She had been frightened.

But she had not surrendered her dignity.

A knock interrupted him.

His cousin and chief financial officer, Lorenzo Ferraro, entered.

“Your stepmother is furious.”

Philippe closed the laptop.

“That's unfortunate.”

“She says you've embarrassed the family.”

Philippe looked up.

“She embarrassed herself.”

Lorenzo placed a folder on the desk.

“Trevor Ashford's company has been bidding on our waterfront redevelopment contracts.”

Philippe frowned.

“I know.”

“Did you know Bianca personally recommended him?”

“No.”

Lorenzo opened the folder.

“Did you know the same company recently purchased a portfolio of distressed medical debt?”

Philippe glanced at the documents.

A list of creditors.

Collection agencies.

Patients.

Then a name caught his attention.

Miriam Hart.

He went still.

“Who is that?”

Lorenzo checked the page.

“Deceased patient. Brooklyn address. Why?”

Philippe stared.

He remembered Haven mentioning her mother's medical bills in the background report Sofia had prepared with Haven's permission for the privacy complaint.

He looked at the file again.

Trevor's company had purchased the debt less than two weeks before the gala.

Philippe's voice turned cold.

“Find out why Ashford is buying debts connected to a waitress he just humiliated.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“You think there's a connection?”

May you like

Philippe looked toward the window.

“I think coincidence is becoming expensive.”
