Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

The photographs changed everything.

Philippe brought them to an independent forensic investigator.

Nadia coordinated with law enforcement.

Haven remained involved in every decision concerning her mother's belongings.

No one took the evidence without her consent.

The investigator identified several people in the photographs.

Trevor Ashford.

A former nonprofit accountant.

Two executives connected to Ferraro charitable foundations.

And Bianca Ferraro.

Haven stared at the screen.

Bianca knew my mother?

Philippe's expression darkened.

Apparently.

Another image showed Miriam speaking with Alessia near a doorway.

Both women looked serious.

Alessia was signing.

Miriam appeared to be watching closely.

Haven's eyes filled.

Her mother had learned ASL alongside her after the meningitis.

She had insisted on learning properly.

Not just a few words.

Not just enough to communicate basic needs.

She wanted Haven to have access to every conversation, every joke, every argument, every ordinary family moment.

Now Haven understood why Miriam had been able to communicate with Alessia so easily.

The investigators reviewed financial records from the Harbor Access Initiative.

They found evidence that grant funds had been diverted through consulting contracts.

Several payments went to companies connected to Trevor Ashford.

Others passed through accounts controlled by Bianca's foundation.

Philippe stared at the findings.

He felt sick.

His sister had been right.

The charity had been used to steal money intended for vulnerable young adults.

Then the investigator found something else.

A witness statement from seven years earlier.

It had been filed but never fully pursued.

The witness described seeing Alessia argue with Trevor Ashford outside the nonprofit's offices shortly before her death.

Philippe read the statement three times.

Then looked at Haven.

I should have found this.

She shook her head.

You couldn't search records you didn't know existed.

He looked away.

Haven reached across the table.

She touched his hand.

He looked up.

We can find the truth now.

For a moment, Philippe forgot the room.

The investigators.

The documents.

The years of anger.

He saw only Haven.

A woman who had every reason to mistrust his family.

Yet she was sitting beside him.

Helping him search for answers.

He signed:

Why are you doing this?

Haven looked at him.

Because your sister deserves the truth.

May you like

Then she added:

And so does my mother.
