Chapter 10 - THE LETTER MIRIAM NEVER SENT

The final piece of the mystery came from Pearl.

She found an envelope hidden inside an old cookbook.

It was addressed to Haven.

Miriam's handwriting covered the front.

Haven opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a letter.

Her mother had written it shortly before her final hospitalization.

My beautiful Haven,

If you're reading this, there are things I didn't have the courage to tell you while I was alive.

Years ago, I volunteered with a young woman named Alessia Ferraro. She was brave, intelligent, and determined to expose people who were stealing from a program meant to help Deaf young adults find work.

She trusted me with photographs and copies of documents.

When she died, I became frightened.

I had you to protect.

I told myself I would come forward when it was safe.

Then I became ill.

And the days became smaller.

I'm sorry I waited.

Please don't carry my fear as your inheritance.

You deserve a life bigger than the things that frightened me.

Love, Mom.

Haven pressed the letter against her chest.

She cried.

Not because her mother had failed her.

Because she finally understood how frightened Miriam had been.

Philippe sat beside her.

He waited.

When Haven looked up, he signed:

Do you want to talk?

She nodded.

Mom knew Alessia. She wanted to help.

Philippe read the letter.

His eyes filled.

She did help, he signed.

Haven shook her head.

She waited too long.

Philippe looked at her.

She kept the evidence. She made sure it could survive her. That matters.

Haven stared at him.

Then she nodded.

Together, they delivered the letter and photographs to investigators.

The evidence helped establish a clearer picture of the financial fraud and the people involved.

It did not answer every question about Alessia's death.

But it gave investigators new leads.

For Haven, it also gave something else.

Peace.

May you like

Not the silence she'd known since childhood.

But the knowledge that her mother had loved her fiercely, even when fear made her imperfect.
