Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT RAVI GREEDY

Ravi Greedy had inherited a violent world.

His father had controlled illegal gambling operations and protection rackets.

Ravi had spent much of his adult life trying to move the family's businesses into legitimate industries.

But the past did not disappear simply because a man changed his ambitions.

Ravi still had enemies.

Still carried a reputation.

And still used fear more often than he should.

When Diane confronted him, she did not soften her words.

"People are afraid of you."

Ravi looked at her.

"Yes."

"Do you like that?"

He hesitated.

"Sometimes."

Diane stared.

"Why?"

"Because fear keeps people from testing you."

She shook her head.

"Fear also keeps people from telling you the truth."

Ravi went still.

Diane continued.

"At the party, I thought you were going to kill me."

He looked away.

"I shouldn't have said what I said."

She waited.

Ravi looked back.

"I was angry. Catherine used you to embarrass me. But you didn't deserve a threat."

Diane nodded slowly.

"Then don't do it again."

Ravi almost smiled.

"You give orders to dangerous men very easily."

Diane folded her arms.

"I'm terrified. I just don't think that gives you the right to be cruel."

For a long moment, Ravi said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"Understood."

It was the first time in years that someone had corrected him without trying to flatter or manipulate him.

And Ravi found himself thinking about her words long after she left.
