Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF CHANGING

Ravi's relationship with Diane did not erase his past.
He knew that.
She knew it too.
When news of their relationship reached his associates, several expressed concern.
Some believed Diane made him vulnerable.
Others believed she would distract him from business.
Ravi listened.
Then made his position clear.
"Diane is not part of my operations."
One associate frowned.
"She's a liability."
Ravi looked at him.
"No."
He leaned forward.
"My past decisions created liabilities. Don't blame her for them."
Over the following months, Ravi began making changes.
He expanded legitimate business operations.
Strengthened financial oversight.
And worked with attorneys to address unresolved legal issues.
The process was difficult.
Some associates left.
Others resisted.
Ravi lost money.
Influence.
And relationships built on fear.
But he continued.
Diane watched carefully.
She did not mistake promises for proof.
One evening, Ravi asked:
"Do you believe people can change?"
Diane considered.
"Yes."
He looked hopeful.
Then she added:
"But change isn't something you announce. It's something you keep doing."
Ravi nodded.
"I know."
She smiled.
"Good."

He reached for her hand.
This time, she took it.
