Chapter 15 - SHE NEVER HAD TO HIDE AGAIN

Their wedding took place on a quiet summer afternoon overlooking Puget Sound.

There were forty guests.

Maya stood beside Khloe.

Evelyn attended.

Several colleagues from Khloe's forensic accounting firm came.

Dante invited the people who had remained in his life after the empire disappeared.

The ceremony was simple.

No elaborate security.

No political alliances.

No whispered negotiations.

Khloe wore an ivory dress with delicate lace sleeves.

Her hair fell in soft waves.

When she reached Dante, he took her hands.

“You look beautiful.”

She smiled.

“You look nervous.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

They exchanged vows.

Dante promised honesty.

Khloe promised partnership.

Neither promised to control the other.

When the officiant pronounced them married, Dante kissed her.

The guests applauded.

Maya cried.

Khloe laughed through her own tears.

Years later, people still told the story of the woman who hid beneath a mafia boss's table.

They remembered Jared.

The broken knee.

The expensive napkin.

The criminal conspiracy.

The fall of Dante Varga's empire.

But Khloe remembered something different.

She remembered crawling out from beneath the table, soaking wet and terrified.

She remembered offering to pay for a napkin she could not afford.

And she remembered discovering that survival was not the same as freedom.

Dante had helped her escape one dangerous moment.

But she had built the life that followed.

She had testified.

Recovered.

Found meaningful work.

Made friends.

Learned to trust herself again.

And chosen love without surrendering her independence.

One evening, long after their wedding, Khloe and Dante returned to the restaurant.

They sat at the same table.

The waiter brought dessert.

Dante looked beneath the table.

Khloe raised an eyebrow.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking for unexpected guests.”

She laughed.

“Very funny.”

He smiled.

“Do you ever think about that night?”

“All the time.”

“Do you regret hiding under my table?”

Khloe considered.

“No.”

“Even knowing who I was?”

She looked at him.

“I don't regret surviving.”

Dante reached for her hand.

She took it.

Then she looked around the restaurant.

No one was chasing her.

No one was shouting her name.

No one was telling strangers she was unstable.

She was not hiding.

She was not afraid to leave.

And she was not afraid to stay.

For the first time in her adult life, both choices belonged to her.

Dante smiled.

“What are you thinking?”

Khloe squeezed his hand.

“That I finally know what freedom feels like.”

Outside, rain began falling over Seattle.

The same city.

The same weather.

But everything had changed.

Two years earlier, Khloe had run through the rain believing she might never escape.

Now she watched it through the restaurant window beside the man she loved.

Not because he had claimed her.

Not because he had rescued her.

May you like

But because they had chosen each other.

And this time, when the rain stopped, Khloe knew she could walk out through the front door.
