Chapter 13 - THE LIFE SHE BUILT HERSELF

Khloe left HarborPoint Financial.
She accepted a position with an independent forensic accounting firm.
Her work focused on financial fraud and asset recovery.
She helped investigators trace stolen funds and identify shell companies.
The job was demanding.
But it belonged to her.
She moved into a new apartment.
Bought furniture she liked.
Replaced the baseball bat beside her bed with a reading lamp.
Some nights, fear still returned.
She continued therapy.
She learned that recovery was not a straight line.
Dante respected her independence.
They dated slowly.
Sometimes they argued.
Sometimes she needed space.
Sometimes he struggled with the habits of command he had learned over decades.
When she told him he was being controlling, he listened.
Not perfectly.
But seriously.
One evening, he admitted:
“I spent my whole life believing love meant keeping people close enough that nothing could happen to them.”
Khloe looked at him.
“That's not love.”
“I know that now.”
“Love means trusting someone to make choices you might not like.”
Dante nodded.
“I'm learning.”
May you like
She took his hand.
“Good.”
