Chapter 9 - AVA DECIDED WHEN SHE WAS READY

Two years passed before Ava agreed to spend a full weekend with Vanessa.

No pressure.

No grandparents campaigning.

No “but she’s your mother.”

Ava decided.

Vanessa had done the work.

Therapy.

Parenting education.

Stable job.

Restitution payments.

No contact with Westbridge.

Strong boundaries with Diane.

That last part was hardest.

When Diane complained:

“Ethan is turning Ava against us,”

Vanessa answered:

“No, Mom. I did damage. I have to repair it.”

For the first time, Ethan believed she had actually changed.

Not because she became his friend.

Because she stopped outsourcing responsibility.

Before Ava’s first overnight visit, Vanessa arrived carrying a small suitcase.

Ava stared.

“What’s that?”

“My stuff.”

“Why?”

Vanessa smiled nervously.

“I thought maybe I’d stay in the guest room near yours in case you wanted space.”

Ava looked at Ethan.

He shrugged.

“Your call.”

Then Ava looked at Vanessa.

“Can you braid my hair?”

The entire room went silent.

Vanessa’s eyes filled instantly.

“Only if you want me to.”

Ava nodded.

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands shook as she divided Ava’s hair gently.

No pulling.

No commands.

Halfway through, Ava whispered:

“Too tight.”

Vanessa stopped immediately.

“Thank you for telling me.”

She loosened it.

Ethan looked away because his eyes burned.

Repair was not forgetting.

Sometimes it was simply giving someone the chance to say:

Too tight.

May you like

And being listened to.
