Chapter 5 - AVA FINALLY TOLD THE THERAPIST WHY MOM PULLED HER HAIR

Ava began seeing a child therapist experienced in high-conflict family situations.
Dr. Hannah Brooks.
Neither parent was allowed to use therapy as an interrogation.
Good.
Ethan followed the rule.
Vanessa initially fought it.
That mattered.
Three weeks later, Dr. Brooks made appropriate disclosures through the proper child-safety process after Ava described something significant.
The day Ethan walked in—
Ava had refused to repeat a story.
What story?
That Daddy had thrown a chair.
He never had.
Vanessa became angry.
Ava said:
“That’s not true.”
Vanessa grabbed her ponytail.
Then Ethan opened the door.
The hair pulling had not been random discipline.
It happened because Ava finally refused to repeat a lie.
Ethan sat in Rachel’s office after learning this.
His face was buried in his hands.
“She was protecting me.”
Rachel corrected him gently.
“She was telling the truth.”
That was better.
Ava should not have to be anyone’s protector.
When Ethan saw her that evening, he did not mention therapy details.
He simply made pancakes.
Dinner pancakes.
Ava approved.
Then she asked:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to hit Mom again?”
Ethan froze.
There it was.
The question he deserved.
“No.”
“Even if she’s mean?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He sat beside her.
“Because hitting Mom was wrong.”
“But she hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“That was wrong too.”
Ava frowned.
“Then why did you do it?”
“Because I got very angry and made a bad choice.”
She thought.
Then:
“You were protecting me.”
“I was trying to.”
He looked at her.
“But protecting you doesn't mean I get to hurt someone because I’m angry.”
Ava nodded slowly.
“Next time call police?”
“Yes.”
“Or Grandma June?”
Ethan smiled.
“Grandma June is terrifying.”
Ava giggled.
Good.
Then she said:
“Mom says you only say sorry because the camera saw you.”
That hurt.
Ethan answered carefully.
“The camera seeing me doesn't change whether it was wrong.”
Ava stared.
Then returned to her pancakes.

One small truth at a time.
