Chapter 8 - ETHAN DIDN’T GET EVERYTHING HE WANTED

At the final custody hearing nearly fourteen months later, Ethan wanted primary custody.

Vanessa wanted equal time.

The court did not give either adult everything.

Ava remained primarily with Ethan while Vanessa received progressively structured parenting time tied to demonstrated stability, treatment participation, and Ava’s welfare.

Diane’s contact remained limited.

The judge addressed Ethan directly too.

“Mr. Cole, you admitted striking your wife.”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand why that concerns this court?”

“Yes.”

“What have you done since?”

“Individual therapy.”

“Anger-management counseling.”

“And?”

Ethan looked toward Ava’s representative.

“I stopped telling myself that being provoked makes violence acceptable.”

Good answer.

Not perfect father.

Accountable father.

Vanessa listened.

For the first time in months, her expression was not angry.

Just tired.

Outside court, she approached Ethan.

Rachel stayed nearby.

Vanessa whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

He waited.

“For Ava.”

Good start.

“For the cameras.”

“For making her repeat things.”

“For the money.”

Her eyes filled.

“And for trying to make you look worse so what I did would look smaller.”

Ethan said nothing.

Then Vanessa added:

“You didn’t deserve that.”

He looked at her.

“And you didn't deserve to be slapped.”

She started crying.

Two truths.

Neither canceled the other.

Ethan nodded.

“No.”

“I didn’t.”

That was probably the healthiest conversation they had ever had.

It did not save the marriage.
