Chapter 2 - “THAT WASN’T THE ONLY CAMERA”

For several seconds, Ethan Cole did not understand what his wife meant.
Vanessa stood near the staircase with one hand pressed against the cheek he had slapped.
Their seven-year-old daughter, Ava, clung to Ethan’s shirt, sobbing so hard her entire body shook.
Above them, the living-room security camera blinked steadily.
Ethan stared at Vanessa.
“What did you say?”
Her expression changed.
The fear disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“I said that wasn’t the only camera in this house.”
Ethan’s stomach dropped.
Ava tightened her arms around him.
Vanessa wiped her mouth.
“You really should learn to control your temper.”
Ethan froze.
Then he understood.
The slap.
Whatever else Vanessa had done, he had struck her.
And she wanted him to know it had been recorded.
His anger collapsed into something much more dangerous.
Clarity.
He crouched beside Ava.
“Sweetheart, are you hurt anywhere else?”
She looked toward her mother before answering.
That tiny glance terrified him.
“Ava.”
He softened his voice.
“You can tell me.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“My head hurts.”
Ethan looked at her scalp.
Several strands of hair had been pulled loose around the base of her ponytail.
Redness marked the skin.
His hands started shaking.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She was throwing a tantrum.”
Ethan looked up.
“You pulled her across the room by her hair.”
“She refused to listen.”
“That is not discipline.”
“Oh, please. Your mother spanked you.”
“My mother never dragged me by my hair.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You always make me the villain.”
Ava whispered:
“Daddy…”
He looked down immediately.
“What?”
“Can we go somewhere else?”
That decided everything.
Ethan stood.
“We’re leaving.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You are not taking my daughter.”
“Our daughter.”
“You just assaulted me.”
Ethan went still.
She smiled faintly.
“There are cameras in the kitchen.”
“The hallway.”
“The den.”
“Even the upstairs landing.”
Then:
“And they all saw you hit me.”
Ethan looked at her.
For one terrible second, he felt the urge to shout again.
He didn’t.
Instead, he took out his phone.
Vanessa’s smile faded.
He called 911.
“My name is Ethan Cole. I need officers and medical assistance at my home. I came home and witnessed my wife pulling our seven-year-old daughter by the hair. I intervened, and during the confrontation I struck my wife once.”
Vanessa stared.
He continued:
“There are security cameras inside the house. I want the footage preserved.”
Silence.
He ended the call.
Vanessa whispered:
“You just admitted hitting me.”
“Yes.”
“You idiot.”
“No.”
He looked at Ava.
“I’m done hiding bad choices just because they’re mine.”
Twenty minutes later, two officers arrived.
Ava was examined.
Vanessa gave her statement.
Ethan gave his.
No lies.
No heroic version.
He said plainly:
“I saw Vanessa pulling Ava’s hair. I became angry and slapped Vanessa. I should not have hit her. Then I removed Ava from the situation and called you.”
One officer looked surprised by the admission.
Ethan didn’t care.
The responding officers arranged for the immediate child-safety issue to be documented and for Ava to leave temporarily with Ethan under the emergency circumstances while further family-court and child-protection review could occur.
Vanessa’s attorney would contest it.
Fine.
Let courts decide.
As Ethan packed Ava’s overnight bag, she stood silently in her bedroom.
Then she asked:
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you mad at me?”
He turned.
“No.”
“Mom said you would be.”
“For what?”
Ava looked down.
“For making her angry.”
Ethan’s chest tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I told her I didn’t want to practice anymore.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Practice what?”
Ava’s eyes immediately filled.
“I’m not supposed to tell.”
He crouched.
“Okay.”
No pressure.
Not now.
Then she whispered:
“The things I’m supposed to say about you.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Downstairs, police were documenting one visible camera.
Vanessa had bragged there were others.
Ethan suddenly wondered—
what exactly had those hidden cameras been installed to capture?

And what had his daughter been forced to practice when he was not home?
