Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA BEHIND THE BOOKSHELF

Ethan did not return to the house alone.

His attorney, Rachel Moreno, made that very clear.

“Do not start hunting through walls because Vanessa mentioned cameras.”

“She recorded my daughter.”

“We don’t know what she recorded.”

“Ava said Vanessa made her practice statements about me.”

“I know.”

Rachel leaned across her desk.

“That makes preservation more important, not vigilantism.”

So they did it properly.

Through the family-court process and counsel, preservation demands went out immediately.

The known home-surveillance provider was notified.

Then something unusual surfaced.

The visible security system had only four registered cameras.

Vanessa had claimed there were more.

Private cameras.

A technician retained through appropriate legal channels eventually identified additional devices.

One behind a bookshelf.

One inside a decorative clock.

Another in the upstairs hallway.

The devices were connected to a separate cloud-storage account registered to Vanessa.

When the data was preserved and produced through the legal process, Ethan’s attorney called him.

“You need to prepare yourself.”

“For what?”

“There’s a lot.”

The recordings went back eleven months.

Ethan watched only the portions his lawyer thought immediately relevant.

The first clip showed Vanessa sitting beside Ava at the kitchen table.

Ava was six.

Vanessa held a sheet of paper.

“Say it again.”

Ava whispered:

“Daddy scares me.”

“Louder.”

“Daddy scares me.”

“Why?”

Ava looked confused.

Vanessa pointed to the paper.

“Because Daddy yells and breaks things.”

Ava frowned.

“But Daddy doesn’t break things.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“We’re pretending.”

“I don’t like pretending that.”

“You want Daddy to take you away from me?”

“No.”

“Then practice.”

Ethan stopped the video.

He stood so quickly the chair hit the wall.

Rachel said nothing.

His eyes burned.

“She was coaching her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

He forced himself to sit again.

Another clip.

Vanessa filming herself crying in the kitchen.

Then stopping.

Checking the angle.

Starting again.

Later that same night, Ethan appeared in frame.

He asked:

“Why are you upset?”

Vanessa answered:

“Nothing.”

She had been manufacturing footage.

But not all of it was fake.

One clip showed Ethan slamming a cabinet during an argument.

Another showed him raising his voice.

Rachel paused it.

“This matters too.”

Ethan stared.

“I never touched her.”

“I know.”

“But don't make the mistake of thinking only manipulated footage matters.”

He nodded.

He hated that she was right.

His own anger had given Vanessa material.

Not abuse equivalent to what she had done to Ava.

Still behavior he needed to own.

Then came the worst recording.

Ava stood beside the sofa.

Vanessa said:

“When Daddy asks why you don’t want to stay with him, what do you say?”

Ava whispered:

“He scares me.”

“And who makes you feel safe?”

“You.”

“Good girl.”

Then Ava asked:

“Why are you and Daddy going away?”

Vanessa froze.

“We’re not.”

“But Grandma said after the papers, Daddy won’t live here.”

Ethan stopped the video.

“Grandma?”

Rachel looked at the transcript.

Vanessa’s mother.

Diane Whitmore.

Suddenly this was bigger.
