Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN DEREK TRIED TO ERASE

The investigation into Whitmore Holdings uncovered a network of false invoices and concealed transfers.

Derek had used my identity to establish companies that received money from fraudulent transactions.

He had also forged my signature on several documents.

The evidence was complicated.

But the pattern was clear.

Derek had controlled my life while using my name to conceal his financial activities.

When Sarah explained the findings, I felt physically ill.

"He married me for this?"

She hesitated.

"We can't know everything he intended at the beginning."

I nodded.

But the question stayed with me.

Had he ever loved me?

Or had I simply been useful?

That evening, I opened an old box of photographs.

There I was at twenty-five.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Standing beside friends Derek later convinced me to stop seeing.

I barely recognized her.

She looked confident.

Alive.

Free.

I touched the photograph.

Then whispered:

"Where did you go?"

My phone rang.

Hannah.

"Emily?"

"Hi."

Her voice softened.

"How are you?"

I looked at the photograph.

"I think I'm remembering who I used to be."

Hannah was quiet.

Then said:

"You never disappeared."

My eyes filled.

"You were just trying to survive."

I began crying.

And for the first time, I allowed myself to grieve the years I'd lost.

May you like

Not because I was weak.

Because I finally understood how much had been taken from me.
