Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT HER OWN FUTURE

I enrolled in additional accounting courses.
I opened a bank account only I could access.
I learned to budget without fear.
I reconnected with old friends.
I started therapy.
Some days were difficult.
There were nightmares.
Unexpected memories.
Moments when a raised voice made my heart race.
Healing wasn't a straight line.
But I kept going.
One afternoon, Hannah visited my apartment.
She found me sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by spreadsheets.
"What are you doing?"
I smiled.
"Planning."
"For what?"
"A business."
She stared.
"Emily!"
I laughed.
"I want to help women who are rebuilding their finances after leaving abusive relationships."
Hannah's eyes filled.
"That sounds incredible."
I looked down.
"I know what it's like to have someone control every dollar."
I paused.
"I want to help other women understand their options."
Hannah hugged me.

And for the first time, I began imagining a future that wasn't simply about escaping Derek.
It was about becoming someone I was proud to be.
